Spring Cup – First Round Replay

After last week’s draw with Boss, Vanishing Spray made two changes to their line-up. They dropped Liverpool midfielder Thiago in favour of Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe and they got rid of Alex McCarthy on Tuesday morning, just a few hours before Southampton’s game against Manchester United. Boss made no changes.

Tuesday saw four red cards – two for Arsenal and two for Southampton. Leno was sent off in the 71st minute for punching the ball outside of his area(!), but as Boss had favoured De Gea over the Arsenal ‘keeper, that red card didn’t affect the matchup. Instead, De Gea kept goal against a depleted Southampton and conceded only once – to a Che Adams strike early in the Second Half that was ruled out for offside. Spray won’t mind as the clean sheet for their two United players was worth more.
Man United took the headlines that night winning 9-0 at home to the Saints. Two goals and three assists between Wan-Bissaka and Bruno Fernandes put 29 on the board for Spray and two more appearances gave them a 33-29 lead after the first day. Boss also greatly benefitted from the slaughter of the Saints with two goals and an assist for Martial, two more assists for Luke Shaw and their de Gea clean sheet.

Wednesday evening started well for Boss when Bernando Silva’s shot was palmed into Gabriel Jesus’ path and he headed home to give City the lead. That assist took Boss to within one point of Spray, but just before half-time James Justin ran onto Maddison’s pass back across the box and gave Spray a seven point lead. Both Man City and Leicester City won their games 2-0; Silva got one point for their clean sheet, Justin got another six for his.
The third game was Leeds against Everton. Coleman (Boss) was an unused substitute for the game while Iwobi, Richarlison and Keane all featured for Spray. Together they scored just five points from playing in blue, but they were useful points nevertheless.
Next there were games at Villa Park and Anfield. While Spray rested for the evening, Boss fielded Trent and Antonio. A long story short, Antonio made two assists and successfully brought in eight points, but Liverpool were caught out again this season and TAA lost his clean sheet to a chance goal for Alzate. At the end of play on Day Two, both teams had scored seventeen points and the match rested at 50-46.

One final day, one final match and four players remained to play. Three players started, Abraham sat on the bench throughout. Both teams had a defender play (Reece James for Boss and Cesar Azpilicueta for Spray) and VSFC had Mason Mount in midfield. Already four points behind, Boss needed James to do something special but he wasn’t able to collect anything more than the same clean sheet as his teammates.
So with that and Pickford being replaced by Robin Olsen between the sticks for the Toffees, Vanishing Spray ran out 61-52 winners in the highest-scoring Cup Replay to date. Spray enter the Second Round to face League Two’s Cumberland FC.
