Season 9 – Gameweek 35

The results are in!

That was a very important week.
Game #7000 ended 32-28 and featured no goals, but instead was won by the four combined assists of Brennan Johnson and Riyad Mahrez.

The BFFA Cup Final gave us another Champion. There was a resounding winner, which you will see just below the next paragraph. Congratulations to the winner and we apologise that there wasn’t a greater fanfare.

There were no less than three top-of-the-table matches. One game crowned a new League Champion, one game saw the team in second win and take the league title into the final gameweek, and the third was irrelevant to the league standings but fun nevertheless.
We had a two-point win and three one-point wins, but most dramatic of all, is the way the top of the Premier League looks tonight.

The BFFA Cup Final

Final Score:
Mighty Fine Feeling 43 – 23 All Star Gunners

A full write-up will follow in the coming week.
Congratulations Luke.

Premier League

Qualified for Champions League:
Barons FC, Mighty Fine Feeling

IML Qualifying Round:
??? -v- Route 57 FC; Wijnaldum -v- Boss

So, three of the top four lost. Smash & Grab beat the league leaders. We have Kompany also won. What does this all mean? Well, you don’t need me to tell you, but as you can see there are four teams that could win the title next week! Kompany could finish third. The top two could finish third and fourth. And in the big showdown – Barons play SWP this week.

The Final Gameweek!
World #1’s and new BFFA Cup Champions – Mighty Fine Feeling – play the final gameweek of the regular season against the team at the bottom of the league. On the face of it, you might think that they’d walk it and you’d probably think that if they win they’ll be League Champions. However, it’s just not that easy. We’ve seen in previous seasons how dangerous relegated teams are. Remember AC Reykjavik shocking the Prem a couple of years ago? Well, TMT have pedigree and they are 1-1-1 against MFF this season. Anything could happen.

As mentioned above, Barons and Sporting Wicker Park clash in a giant six-pointer this week. They also come into this matchup 1-1-1 and both these teams have suffered two losses in the last two, including the one- and two-point losses this week. They will probably be setting their line-ups with those near-misses and stupid yellow cards fresh in their minds.

And fifth-placed We have Kompany face sixth-placed Wijnaldum Leviosa. Wij have won the last two, but all three have been very close games (23-20, 40-43, 47-49). There’s an extra match in this gameweek, it will be very interesting if Newcastle & Brighton can play kingmakers next Thursday.

Championship

Promoted: Housewives Favourite

Qualified for Champions League:
Gloopy Yarbles, Housewives Favourite, Hung Like a Bony & The El Dude Brothers

IML Qualifying Round:
All Star Gunners, GoFys FC, StillluvQPR, Webuiltthis City
(ASG -v- 8th; Web City -v- 7th)

Housewives Favourite were not able to cement the title here this week, but take a large points advantage into the final game against Web City. City lost to FC Santa Barbara who were fighting to save their season, and looked liked hanging on until StillluvQPR won their game in the final match with 11 FPts from Morgan Gibbs-White.

The El Dude Brothers took 18 matchpoints off the deficit to the top, and are within a win of pulling level. It will need to be a big win, but the Best-ish #2 team are capable of big scores. That was their seventeenh win in the last eighteen, in which time they had ten 50+ scores and all eighteen were above-average totals. Gloopy Yarbles look stuck in third, but they can pull level on points with Bros if they beat them next week!

The Final Gameweek:
Not only do we have second V third, with the teams just three points apart, but 7th and 8th are level on points and straddling the Relegation Playoff line. Loser goes into the playoff, winner guarantees survival. A draw keeps GoFys up and puts QPR into peril.

League One

Champions: AFC Chester

Qualified for Champions League:
AFC Chester, Atletico Topo Chico, Klopps and Robbers

IML Qualifying Round:
???, ???, Peltier & ???

We have a new Champion!
AFC Chester take the crown whilst taking victory in the historic 7000th game. That defeat for ATC was their fourth consecutive and opened the door for K&R to step into second. Just below them, Fergi Time made a big bid to get themselves into the Champions League qualifiers. Their eight-point win shot them up two spaces into fourth and in prime position for the final attack. ELU will feel hard done by losing with the second-best score in the league, but that 53 means that they have the best total of the three, and also gives them a chance to get into the CLQ as a reserve.

Second and third go into the final week both facing tough opposition. K&R are up against the new League One Champions AFC Chester, and ATC go up against Sugar Daddies who topscored this week with 60, needing to take something away if they are going to challenge for the second automatic promotion place.

Fergi Time will be in the Champions League Qualifiers in Gameweeks 37 & 38 if they beat Peltier next week. The “beached” team in seventh have won their last two meetings though. If FT lose and BVAR win for the fourth successive tie against Jaysokker, then BVAR will be in the CLQ’s; and if both lose but ELU win (vs. OatWheel, 1-1-1 this season), then ELU can regain some glory.

League Two

Champions: Real Bastardos

Runners-Up: Whiskey De Bruyne

Qualified for Champions League:
De Bruyne Trousers, Real Bastardos, Whiskey de Bruyne

Champions League Qualifying Round:
CG XI

IML Qualifying Round:
Conte’s Cockerels, Goleta Hotspur, Harambe Hotspur Orewa Ostriches
(Harambe -v- 8th; 6th -v- 7th)

Two one-point wins settled the battle for Second Place. With the narrowest of victories over the L2 Champions, Whiskey De Bruyne returned to winning ways and deservedly clinched the Runners-Up spot.
Time ran out on De Bruyne Trousers, but they will be in the playoffs in two weeks’ time against the best of [Ole’s at the wheel / Sugar Daddies / Jaysokker].

Similarly, CG XI won well this week, but don’t have enough time now for a shot at promotion. They will however be involved in the Champions League playoffs, probably against either Bestish #4 side Peltier or BFFA Cup Runners-Up All Star Gunners.

League Two is pretty much all sewn up already. There is only the matter ordering the IML Qualifying games for the Postseason. Harambe will be there as the fifth-placed team; they will play the team that finishes in eighth. Goleta are currently in that position and play Harambe in the final week, essentially playing to avoid them in GW37. Conte’s Cockerels look very unlikely to climb up to sixth, so their game against CGXI will be to hold onto seventh. Orewa probably have the hardest game of the three, against DBT, but look set enough to slide in as sixth.

The Post Season

The End of Season 9 is but one gameweek away!

Eleven Premier League games will shape the final 20 league games next week. Newcastle will be open the gameweek on Saturday and close the season the following Thursday. Brighton also feature twice in this gameweek as they chase European qualification.

We have a batch of our own teams still chasing a place in the Champions League and the IML. Not to mention the teams still chasing promotion and playoff glory.

As we enter the deciding gameweek, here’s how the postseason is shaping up:

The Playoffs!

The highlight of the post-season: our inaugural Promotion Play-offs.

At the end of the season – GW36 – the top two teams from the lower divisions will be promoted and the bottom two will be relegated. In previous seasons it was a straight three-up, three-down, but this year we are introducing Pro/Rel Play-Offs, giving the teams in eighth the opportunity to fight for their place. Third-placed teams, who should be much stronger and better prepared, no longer get an automatic promotion, but instead have to play two legs against a weaker team to get themselves over that line.

Two Legs, GW37 & GW38.

Playoff #1: 8th, Premier League vs. 3rd, Championship
Route 57 FC vs. The El Dude Bros -or- Gloopy Yarbles
Winner gets a Premier League place in Season 10.

Playoff #2: 8th, Championship vs. 3rd, League One
GoFYS FC -or- StillluvQPR vs. Klopps and Robbers -or- Atletico Topo Chico
Winner gets a Championship place in Season 10.

Playoff #3: 8th, League One vs. 3rd, League Two
Ole’s at the wheel/Sugar Daddies/Jaysokker vs. De Bruyne Trousers
Winner gets a League One place in Season 10.

And here’s how the Post-Season affects everybody:

#1) Champion of Champions

The teams at the top of each league at the end of Gameweek 36 will win the title and the prizes attached to it. But there will be some discussion as to which of the four was the best team of the season, so in the final two gameweeks the four League Champions will playoff for another $50 and the title of Champion of Champions!

Three games, knockout style.
Ties broken by goals scored, assists, least reds, least yellows, Bonus Points then BPS.

GW37:⚽ Highest-scoring Champion vs. Lowest-scoring Champion
⚽ Champion #2 vs. Champion #3
GW38:Winner vs. Winner

The outright winner will also be set-up to play in the just-for-fun Dare Holdren Community Shield against the BFFA Cup Winners in Gameweek 1 next season.

At the moment we have two of the four Champions announced. They are:
Real Bastardos (L1) and AFC Chester (L2)
The four remaining contenders for the Premier League title are:
Mighty Fine Feeling, Barons FC, Smash & Grab and Sporting Wicker Park.
And in the Championship: Housewives Favourite and The El Dude Brothers.

#2) The Runners-Up Trophy

For the other ten teams qualified for the Champions League, we have the Runners-Up Trophy.
Two weeks, the most accumulated points wins an additional $30. (Prize is split if tied).

So far we have:
Three of: Mighty Fine Feeling / Barons FC / Sporting Wicker Park / Smash & Grab / We have Kompany
(One will win the League; one will finish fifth).
One of: Housewives Favourite -or- The El Dude Bros
(Whichever fails to win the league).
Gloopy Yarbles
Hung Like a Bony
Atletico Topo Chico
Klopps & Robbers
Whiskey De Bruyne
De Bruyne Trousers

#3) The Champions League Qualifiers

There will be four teams playing for the final two Champions League spots.

The first one will be League Two’s CG XI
The second will be the highest-ranked of Fergi Time/BattleVAR Galatico/East Loop United
The third and fourth teams will be the two highest-scoring teams that don’t qualify for the Champions League. In the running in this final week are: Peltier (1561FPts), Atletico Topo Chico (1532), Smash & Grab (if they drop to 5th, 1528), We have Kompany (1515), Boss (1505), Sporting Wicker Park (if they drop to fourth, 1475), East Loop United (1458).

#4) The Intramural League Qualifiers

If you don’t make the Champions League places or the Qualifiers then you could qualify for next season’s Intramural League.
Each League will send one representative to the IML in September.
In GW37, ⚽ 5th will play 8th & ⚽ 6th plays 7th.
⚽ The winners of each game will playoff in GW38 for qualification.
Less than four teams? Then the top team(s) get a first-week bye. Lovely.

We have twelve teams already signed up for the post-season quallies:
(unless they are called up to the CLQ)
In the Premier League: Wijnaldum Leviosa, Boss and Route 57 FC.
Championship: All Star Gunners, GoFYS, StillluvQPR and Webuiltthis City.
League One: Peltier.
League Two: Harambe Hotspur, Conte’s Cockerels, Goleta Hotspur, Orewa Ostriches.

#5) The Wooden Spoon

The bottom two from each league will unfortunately miss out on the IML Qualifiers and instead have their own little tournament to play in. The aim is simply to avoid being the season’s worst team. No-one wants that. If you finish ninth or tenth in your league then you will no doubt already be under pressure to keep your job as a head coach! Pass this test and you could be off the hook.

Eight teams – the worst two scores in Gameweek 37 will be set up in a final week showdown ⚽ Win there and save your blushes. Lose that and you’ll be made to remember it (but be thankful that we didn’t set any forfeits this year!)

The first Wooden Spoon tourney will feature:
Cedar Creek, Chicken and Bane San., FC Santa Barbara, R.O.K. FC, TMT
and Vanishing Spray plus two more.
