Seven teams marked their 250th League match this weekend –
AFC Chester (won in League 1),
Barons (won in the PL),
Boss (won, PL),
MFF (won, PL) (and simultaneously became the 4th team to score 1,000FPts in the Cup),
StillluvQPR (lost, Champ.),
Webuiltthis City (won, Ch.) &
Wijnaldum Leviosa (lost, PL)
– and All Star Gunners played their 350th game in all competitions, winning there too.

Premier League

The drama continues in the Premier League as the leaders take a big win to increase their cushion at the top. That loss, and the score, means that Smash & Grab (now #2 in the World) are now exactly level with Mighty Fine Feeling (now #1 in the World) in the Premier League’s second place. The pair do still have a big matchpoints advantage over Barons, and they play each other in the penultimate game of the regular season.

On top of that, Sporting Wicker Park open up a seven-point cushion over fifth-placed We have Kompany, on the day that Kompany pass 12,500 matchpoints in league competition, and Wicker Park stay level with second on 53 Points. They play Barons and Smash & Grab in the final three games, but have two of the bottom three next.

You might expect SWP to walk over Vanishing Spray given the difference between the sides, however Spray aren’t going down without a fight. They won their third game in four and stay competitive at the wrong end of the table. That competition is still very much alive due to further losses being handed to R57 & TMT and, although while Boss moved up a place, all four look like they may be involved in the battle for survival right until the end.

Championship

Qualified for Champions League:
Gloopy Yarbles, Housewives Favourite & The El Dude Brothers

All Star Gunners’ celebrated their 150th league win this week and kept their narrow hopes of fourth place alive. Right behind them, Webuiltthis City were also successful with the top score of the week thanks to double-figure weeks for Eze, Gakpo & Jota. It’s the first time Web City have got three 50+ scores in consecutive weeks since the end of last season. Strong finishers.

There was no change at the top of the table as the top three all won, with 50+ scores for Wives Fave and El Dude Bros, and an unimpressive win for the Yarbles with the second-lowest tally in the league. However, it’s not how you win, it’s who you do it against, and that low-scoring game made it 4-0 for Yarbles over Sane.

League One

It doesn’t matter how you win, as long as you bring those three points home. It was scarce consolation in a disappointing Cup Semi-Final week for Chester, but keeping up with the league leaders is all important at this stage, especially when the top two still have play again before the season ends.

The top four all won this week and, with time running out, the top three look like breaking away from the teams below them. Unless BattleVAR and Fergi Time can rock the boat in the next two weeks, then it could be a three-way dog fight for automatic promotion. Next week, ATC will play Peltier and it’s not a surefire win, they are 2-1 against the team in seventh this season. That Peltier team thrashed ATC 62-37 nine weeks ago, so there might be changes at the top of League One in the busy few days to come!

League Two

Qualified for Champions League:
Real Bastardos

Harambe’s 59-43 win this week was their 100th League win in the BFFA and they used it to move up a place to fifth. With De Bruyne trousers losing narrowly, fifth place is still in the running for promotion, albeit via the play-offs. Taking those three points from DBT were CG XI, who moved closer to third and have a very nice run-in, no longer needing to play any of the teams above them.

At the top, it was more of the same for Monty and Whiskey. That was Real’s fifth win in a row and WdB’s seventh! With only five games to go, CG XI can no longer catch the Bastardos and so, with a guaranteed top three place, Paul’s high-flyers will be in the Champions League next season. And if they win the title, they will be seeded and avoid the other League Champions too. But more on that in the weeks to come. Right now, Real Bastardos and Whiskey de Bruyne look like they will be playing League One fantasy football next season.

The Post Season

The End of Season Approaches…!

Five games to go.

These final few games will decide titles, relegations, play-offs and qualification for tournaments next season! Here’s what to watch for as we approach the Post Season:

The Playoffs!

The highlight of the post-season: our inaugural Promotion Play-offs.

At the end of the season – GW36 – the top two teams from the lower divisions will be promoted and the bottom two will be relegated. In previous seasons it was a straight three-up, three-down, but this year we are introducing Pro/Rel Play-Offs, giving the teams in eighth the opportunity to fight for their place. Third-placed teams, who should be much stronger and better prepared, no longer get an automatic promotion, but instead have to play two legs against a weaker team to get themselves over that line.

#1) 8th, Premier League vs. 3rd, Championship: Winner gets a Premier League place in Season 10.
#2) 8th, Championship vs. 3rd, League One: Winner gets a Championship place in Season 10.
#3) 8th, League One vs. 3rd, League Two: Winner gets a League One place in Season 10.
Two Legs, GW37 & GW38.

And here’s how the Post-Season affects everybody:

#1) Champion of Champions

The teams at the top of each league at the end of Gameweek 36 will win the title and the prizes attached to it. But there will be some discussion as to which of the four was the best team of the season, so in the final two gameweeks the four League Champions will playoff for another $50 and the title of Champion of Champions!

Three games, knockout style.
Ties broken by goals scored, assists, least reds, least yellows, Bonus Points then BPS.

GW37:⚽ Highest-scoring Champion vs. Lowest-scoring Champion
⚽ Champion #2 vs. Champion #3
GW38:Winner vs. Winner

The outright winner will also be set-up to play in the just-for-fun Dare Holdren Community Shield against the BFFA Cup Winners in Gameweek 1 next season.

#2) The Runners-Up Trophy

All the teams finishing 2nd and 3rd will qualify for the 2023 Champions League next season, as will the current Champions League Champions – Gloopy Yarbles – and the BFFA Cup Winners (to be decided).
(If the CL Winners and/or the BFFA Cup winners finish the season in the top three, then the fourth-placed team in that League will also get an automatic Champions League placement and be entered into the Runners-Up Trophy.)

These ten teams will play in a post-season mini-tournament – two weeks, the most accumulated points wins an additional $30.

#3) The Champions League Qualifiers

The 2023 Champions League will again be contested by 16 teams, split into four groups of four (again with one League Champion in each group).

The top three teams from each league this season, plus the Champions League Champions (or the 4th-placed in their league) and the BFFA Cup winners (or the 4th-placed in their league) will make up fourteen of the qualified teams, meaning we need two more.

Starting this season we will invite four teams to play two matches during the Post-Season, and the two winners from those games will earn a place in the CL Draw in August. Initially, those four teams will be the 4x 4th-placed teams at the end of the season, but as some will qualify for the Champions League via other means, those slots will open up.

We know now that the top four in the Championship will automatically qualify for the Champions League (three league places plus Gloopy as CL holders) so as it stands Peltier would get a play-off match as the next-best unqualified teams in the BFFA.

Similarly, if the BFFA Cup winners finish in the top four, then a second reserve will get a shot at Champions League qualification too. This means that the high-scoring teams will want to keep an eye on the Best-ish table every week as teams fall out of the top three and the double gameweeks shake up the rankings.

Today, the top reserves – the top five scoring teams not currently in a top-four league position – are:
Peltier, 1347 FPts (Seventh, League One)
All Star Gunners, 1340 FPts (Fifth, Championship)
Boss, 1299 FPts (Eighth, Premier League)
We have Kompany, 1293 FPts (Fifth, Premier League)
Route 57 FC, 1237 FPts (Seventh, Premier League).

#4) The Intramural League Qualifiers

If you don’t make the Champions League places or the Qualifiers then you could qualify for next season’s Intramural League.
Each League will send one representative to the IML in September.
(Once there, the Premier League team will play the League Two rep across two legs in the First Round, and the Championship side will play a League One club).
In GW37, ⚽ 5th will play 8th & ⚽ 6th plays 7th.
⚽ The winners of each game will playoff in GW38 for qualification.
Less than four teams? Then the top team(s) get a first-week bye. Lovely.

#5) The Wooden Spoon

The bottom two from each league will unfortunately miss out on the IML Qualifiers and instead have their own little tournament to play in. The aim is simply to avoid being the season’s worst team. No-one wants that. If you finish ninth or tenth in your league then you will no doubt already be under pressure to keep your job as a head coach! Pass this test and you could be off the hook.

Eight teams – the worst two scores in Gameweek 37 will be set up in a final week showdown ⚽ Win there and save your blushes. Lose that and you’ll be made to remember it (but be thankful that we didn’t set any forfeits this year!)

Basic postseason direction
Opening postseason split. This will change when the Champions League winners and BFFA Cup winners are confirmed.

As It Stands…

The Cup Semi-Finals are over and the landscape changes again. It’s a bit clearer now to see how the run-in will shape up and what it could mean to a lot of managers.

For example, Sporting Wicker Park will be backing Mighty Fine Feeling to win the Cup in Gameweek 35 as that will mean that fourth place will go straight into the draw for the Champions League Group Stage. Right behind them, We have Kompany are also eyeing up a couple of routes into next season’s tournament. They could finish second or third and qualify automatically, they could finish fourth and go through the Qualifiers in the post-season, or they could outscore ASG, Peltier and Boss and get into the Qualies that way.

Conversely, ASG will be building a team for the Cup Final in the hopes that they can win the Cup and book themselves a place in the Group Stages automatically. However, if that doesn’t work, then they could still finish fourth in the Championship or, more likely, finish as the highest-scoring reserve and go through the Qualifiers. Either way, they look likely to be involved at some point.

There are still a lot of teams sniffing around that fourth-placed spot and some very important deciders are coming up.

In League One, BattleVAR (4th), East Loop (5th) and Fergi Time (6th) have all played against each other four times apiece now. The most recent game was this week when BVAR rose to 4th, their highest placing of the season, after beating ELU and dropping them to fifth (their lowest place this season!) They won’t meet again until after the end of the regular season. So the strength of their remaining fixtures may determine their final rankings. All three have to face the bottom two, relegation-bound, teams. However, BattleVAR still have to face #’s 1, 2 & 3. Meanwhile ELU will play #2, #3 and #8; Fergi Time are looking at #3, #7 & #8. Could this reverse the order, and do Kloops & Robbers need to be looking over their shoulder? Given that they have to face all three, I’d say so.

And finally in League Two, Real Bastardos/Monty have clinched a top three place and are looking like they could become the first team to win promotion this season. Second-placed Whiskey de Bruyne also won this week and saw the gap to third open up when De Bruyne Trousers failed to (practically) eliminate CG XI from the promotion race, losing by just two, meaning that that Play-Off place will probably be contested into the final two weeks. It promises to be close!
