Premier League

New World #1’s Smash & Grab had beaten 9th-placed TMT in all of their last three league meetings, but came up short this weekend, allowing Barons (who were reeling from dropping points to Vanishing Spray last week) an opportunity to regain the top spot. They took that opportunity with a fifth win of the season over R57 and now sit precariously at the top of the table, three points clear but with an inferior points total. The top two play next week.

Wijnaldum Leviosa moved to five wins-in-a-row by beating Spray once again, albeit nine gameweeks after the 45-all draw last time they clashed. They are now just one point below fifth, coming back from being 14 points below fifth those nine weeks ago. Suddenly, third place doesn’t look so far away.

At the other end, that loss left Spray seven points below the play-off safety net and with some very difficult games to come. However, next they go up against We have Kompany who are five games without any points and looking shaky. Boss and TMT both won, both putting an end to three-game losing streaks, and bring themselves back in contention for seventh place and safety. However, they play each other next week in a big relegation six-pointer.

Championship

Qualified for Champions League:
Gloopy Yarbles, Housewives Favourite, Hung Like a Bony & The El Dude Brothers

As per the news article this morning – Housewives Favourite completed a full sweep of wins over ASG, making it impossible for them to finish below fourth, and making fourth place unassailable for ASG and the teams below them. With Gloopy Yarbles receiving a shock defeat away at Web City Stadium, Wives Fave are now six points clear at the top with a commanding fantasy points advantage too. In a league that features four of the top eight scoring teams in the BFFA, it is no surprise that automatic promotion to the Premier League is still a long way off and wins for Hung and Bros mean that the top four could still finish the season in any order.

Lower down, that win for Webuiltthis City made a strong argument for them keeping their place in the Championship, but StillluvQPR broke their six-game winless run and are back upto eighth and chasing them down. Next week however they have to face the league leaders who are flying on a four-game winning run, and sixth will play seventh, meaning that one will probably move further away from the relegation zone.

League One

The top two continue their fantastic form with wins this Easter weekend. AFC Chester have won five of the last six and Atletico Topo Chico have won all six since their defeat to BattleVAR Galatico in GW24. B-VAR themselves are on a roll, taking that win over the current league leaders and taking eighteen points from the last seven games to take them from eighth to fifth. They are now just two points below East Loop United who they play next weekend, meaning that if they win, they could be on course for a top-three finish.

With AFC Chester in the BFFA Cup Semi-Finals next weekend, fourth place in League One could still result in automatic qualification to the Champions League. As such, ELU are well placed to challenge for it and a third win over BattleVAR would not only help them make a bid for it, but also push on third place too. The weekend after next ELU will play K&R in third place and immediately after that they will challenge the mighty AFC Chester for another important three points too. So it’s a busy three weeks for the former Premier League runners-up.

Down in the relegation zone, the bottom two played out a draw which helped neither side, but Ole, Peltier and Fergi all lost, giving them a glimmer of hope still. Next week the Sugar Daddies will play Peltier again, hoping for salvation, while Peltier have an eye on both ends of the table with a top-four place still up for grabs while relegation also still threatens. Fergi Time are better placed to make a move upwards, but must overcome ATC again next weekend to make a move. Having beaten the league leaders on all three occasions so far this season, that might well be possible.

League Two

No change in League Two, with the top three all winning and the next three all losing. Real Bastardos topscored in L2 this week, further increasing their advantage over the others, but De Bruyne Trousers are still pushing for second place with the best tally in the division and the longest current winning streak in the BFFA (6 wins, tied with ATC).

Conte’s Cockerels couldn’t take advantage over the teams above them who lost, but a draw with ninth-placed ROK FC does bring them level with Orewa and Harambe on points. All three are two games shy of CGXI, but all three still get to play the team in fourth on more time, so could be looking up at a Champions League Qualification match in the postseason. Harambe Hotspur are well set with games against the bottom two in the next two weeks, while the Ostriches play the Cockerels next weekend in a big middle-of-the-table clash of feathers!

The Post Season

The End of Season Approaches…!

Six games to go.

These final few games will decide titles, relegations, play-offs and qualification for tournaments next season! Here’s what to watch for as we approach the Post Season:

The Playoffs!

The highlight of the post-season: our inaugural Promotion Play-offs.

At the end of the season – GW36 – the top two teams from the lower divisions will be promoted and the bottom two will be relegated. In previous seasons it was a straight three-up, three-down, but this year we are introducing Pro/Rel Play-Offs, giving the teams in eighth the opportunity to fight for their place. Third-placed teams, who should be much stronger and better prepared, no longer get an automatic promotion, but instead have to play two legs against a weaker team to get themselves over that line.

⚽ #1) 8th, Premier League vs. 3rd, Championship: Winner gets a Premier League place in Season 10.
⚽ #2) 8th, Championship vs. 3rd, League One: Winner gets a Championship place in Season 10.
⚽ #3) 8th, League One vs. 3rd, League Two: Winner gets a League One place in Season 10.
Two Legs, GW37 & GW38.

And here’s how the Post-Season affects everybody:

#1) Champion of Champions

The teams at the top of each league at the end of Gameweek 36 will win the title and the prizes attached to it. But there will be some discussion as to which of the four was the best team of the season, so in the final two gameweeks the four League Champions will playoff for another $50 and the title of Champion of Champions!

Three games, knockout style.
Ties broken by goals scored, assists, least reds, least yellows, Bonus Points then BPS.

GW37:⚽ Highest-scoring Champion vs. Lowest-scoring Champion
⚽ Champion #2 vs. Champion #3
GW38:Winner vs. Winner

The outright winner will also be set-up to play in the just-for-fun Dare Holdren Community Shield against the BFFA Cup Winners in Gameweek 1 next season.

#2) The Runners-Up Trophy

All the teams finishing 2nd and 3rd will qualify for the 2023 Champions League next season, as will the current Champions League Champions – Gloopy Yarbles – and the BFFA Cup Winners (to be decided).
(If the CL Winners and/or the BFFA Cup winners finish the season in the top three, then the fourth-placed team in that League will also get an automatic Champions League placement and be entered into the Runners-Up Trophy.)

These ten teams will play in a post-season mini-tournament – two weeks, the most accumulated points wins an additional $30.

#3) The Champions League Qualifiers

The 2023 Champions League will again be contested by 16 teams, split into four groups of four (again with one League Champion in each group).

The top three teams from each league this season, plus the Champions League Champions (or the 4th-placed in their league) and the BFFA Cup winners (or the 4th-placed in their league) will make up fourteen of the qualified teams, meaning we need two more.

Starting this season we will invite four teams to play two matches during the Post-Season, and the two winners from those games will earn a place in the CL Draw in August. Initially, those four teams will be the 4x 4th-placed teams at the end of the season, but as some will qualify for the Champions League via other means, those slots will open up.

We know now that the top four in the Championship will automatically qualify for the Champions League (three league places plus Gloopy as CL holders) so as it stands Peltier would get a play-off match as the next-best unqualified teams in the BFFA.

Similarly, if the BFFA Cup winners finish in the top four, then a second reserve will get a shot at Champions League qualification too. This means that the high-scoring teams will want to keep an eye on the Best-ish table every week as teams fall out of the top three and the double gameweeks shake up the rankings.

Today, the top reserves – the top five scoring teams not currently in a top-four league position – are:
Peltier, 1347 FPts (Seventh, League One)
All Star Gunners, 1340 FPts (Fifth, Championship)
Boss, 1299 FPts (Eighth, Premier League)
We have Kompany, 1293 FPts (Fifth, Premier League)
Route 57 FC, 1237 FPts (Seventh, Premier League).

#4) The Intramural League Qualifiers

If you don’t make the Champions League places or the Qualifiers then you could qualify for next season’s Intramural League.
Each League will send one representative to the IML in September.
(Once there, the Premier League team will play the League Two rep across two legs in the First Round, and the Championship side will play a League One club).
In GW37, ⚽ 5th will play 8th & ⚽ 6th plays 7th.
⚽ The winners of each game will playoff in GW38 for qualification.
Less than four teams? Then the top team(s) get a first-week bye. Lovely.

#5) The Wooden Spoon

The bottom two from each league will unfortunately miss out on the IML Qualifiers and instead have their own little tournament to play in. The aim is simply to avoid being the season’s worst team. No-one wants that. If you finish ninth or tenth in your league then you will no doubt already be under pressure to keep your job as a head coach! Pass this test and you could be off the hook.

Eight teams – the worst two scores in Gameweek 37 will be set up in a final week showdown ⚽ Win there and save your blushes. Lose that and you’ll be made to remember it (but be thankful that we didn’t set any forfeits this year!)

Basic postseason direction
Basic postseason split. This will change when the Champions League winners and BFFA Cup winners are confirmed.
