Season 8 – Gameweek 34

The results are in!

Chelsea failed to guarantee themselves a Champions League place last night, but are just two points away from doing that next weekend; the top two of Man City and Liverpool both enjoyed another winning weekend and continue to keep it very tight at the top; and down at the other end, Burnley took all three points against Wolves to put the pressure on a struggling Everton side.

Similarly here, we have a dozen sides fighting for Champions League positions, we have a couple of very close battles for League titles and teams desperately fighting for survival with only four games left to pick up points. Some of these will go to the wire!

Premier League

Qualified for Champions League: Route 57 FC
Relegated: FC Santa Barbara
Relegated: GoFYS FC

Things are getting very, very heated in the Premier League with very little time left in the season. Just two points separate second and fifth (and with the expectation being that Route 57 will clinch the title), only two of those four teams can finish in the money places, three of the four will qualify for the Champions League via a Top Four spot, and one team might miss out completely.

It is being repeatedly said in the press that for Liverpool right now – every game is a cup final. That is probably what it feels like to be a BFFA-PL top five team right now too. R57 aren’t over line yet either. With Drafty, Money and Mighty all eleven or twelve points behind them, R57 still require one more win to claim the big money, otherwise they could be caught. This is no time for complacency, especially when fifth-placed Smashy are still to play 6th, 7th & 8th and fourth-placed MFF can look forward to playing all of the bottom three again.

Drafty’s 18th game scoring over 50 Fantasy Points this season, the most in the BFFA (2nd: SWP & Wives’ Fave who have both hit it 16x), was more than enough to relegate GoFYS FC this week and move them up to second. That door was opened by Smash & Grab who wanted to join the elite party and announced their intent with a 9-point win over MFF. That caused MFF to drop two places and Money Team moved up one hard-earned place with a narrow win over the league leaders.

BFFA Cup semi-finalists FC Santa Barbara were also relegated this week after a two-point loss to Vanishing Spray. In doing so, Spray made themselves safe from the drop and still somehow have a – dare we say it – a shot at second place! Similarly, SB Town are still mathematically within reach of that cluttered mid-table, but after that loss to ASG they will probably settle for seventh and go again next season.

Championship

Promoted: Boss
Promoted: Sporting Wicker Park

Relegated: AC Reykjavik

Two more teams are hosting promotion parties this week – Boss & Sporting Wicker Park. Both are returning to the Premier League after some time away and will be adding some pedigree to next season’s top flight, with 91 combined PL wins and a handful of QF & SF wins in their previous Cup and Champions League endeavours too.

Both will of course also be appearing in next season’s CL, having guaranteed a top four place, but don’t yet know which other Championship teams will be joining them. The three below them – Wij, Gloopy and Barons are all within three points of each other and fighting over third. None of those three have yet stepped foot into the top tier and will be very keen to do so next month. Barons may have the most difficult run-in of the three; they still have to play both of their rivals and second-placed SWP. Meanwhile Gloopy will be hoping to mop up points when they play the bottom three over the next three matchdays; so far they are 8-2 against their opposition in the league this season, and those two losses were back in GW’s 1 & 8.

Wijnaldum’s next game will be against ELU who are sitting just two points above the relegation zone and are still active in the transfer market (they swiped Konsa away from yours truly just this morning!). ELU marked up a 50+ score for the third week in a row this week (joint-longest current streak, matched by Drafty and Peltier) and were very unlucky to be facing Team-of-the-Week Gloopy who scored a mighty 84. The Wizards have beaten United on all three occasions this season, but if they were to have met last week then they would have lost 51-50. In fact, ELU have outscored Wijnaldum 15/34 times across the board, so 3 wins out of 3 looks like it could have been a bit of a fluke. We will see on Monday.

Either side of East Loop, Web City and StillluvQPR are also holding on to hope in the closing stages of the season. City’s four clean sheets were enough for a low-scoring win this week, despite a late threat from AFC Chester’s four Man Utd & Chelsea players. Stillluv, who outscored both with Ronaldo’s double gameweek exploits, lost 50-44 and remain in eighth.

League One

Champions: Housewives Favourite

There is another dramatic promotion finale in the making in the third tier. Chicken & Bane San., ranked 38th/40 in the Best-ish standings, drew with the league leaders 46-each and kept a grasp on second place. Ole’s at the Wheel added to the woes of Banana Swans whilst keeping a three-point gap between themselves and fourth.

That fourth place changed hands again when Hung Like a Bony won a six-pointer at home against Cup Semi-Finalists El Dude Bros. Now Hung, Bros and even About to get Messi are eyeing up third place in final four weeks. Messi, who have won 6 of their last 7, will gain a lot more momentum if they can beat Hung LaB again this weekend. In GW26, they scorched their way to a first-win-in-five in a 70-54 thriller with Hung and have only lost two since. They have been slowly chipping away at the teams above them, but have they left it too late?

Meanwhile Ole’s at the Wheel and The El Dude Brothers will play seventh and eighth respectively, having both won two of three of these meetings thus far, knowing that BattleVAR and Cornballers will both be trying hard to remain in League One for another year. Champions Housewives Favourite will give Goleta a difficult matchup with their survival looking unlikely and, conversely, bottom side Banana Swans will be worrying second-placed C&BS, having never been beaten by the promotion contenders (W6, D1).

League Two

Promoted: Atletico Topo Chico
Promoted: Fergi Time
Promoted: Peltier

Underneath all of the excitement above, League Two quietly rolls on, almost unnoticed by the rest of the association. However, look closely and things aren’t as placid as one might think. Not only do they have Jaysokker representing the league in the BFFA Cup this weekend, but the race for the title just got a little bit more exciting.

Last week Peltier took on Fergi time for the fourth time and took all three points with the best League Two score of the gameweek. Two goals in two games for Bukayo Saka plus two goals in one game from James Ward-Prowse helped the team in third to complete their second nine-game win-streak of the season and close the gap to second place from four points to just one.

Now only six points ahead of Peltier in first place, Atletico Topo Chico also suffered a loss this week, a surprise loss to The Globes thanks to a large helping of fantasy football kick-ass from Alonso and Ronaldo in the final, bonus, game of the week. It sets up what will hopefully be a thrilling end to the season as ATC have to play Fergi Time and Peltier in the next three weeks – a pair of six-pointers that could reshape the top of the table right before the grand finale.

Champions League Qualification

In August the Champions League will return with this season’s best teams competing for the most prestigious prize in the BFFA.

Qualifying Positions:
Premier League Top 4,
Championship Top 4,
League One Top 3,
League Two Top 3,
Champions League Holders,
BFFA Cup Winners.

The 8/16 teams that have qualified so far:
Atletico Topo Chico, Boss, Fergi Time, Housewives Favourite, Mighty Fine Feeling, Peltier, Route 57 FC, Sporting Wicker Park
BFFA Cup Winners: FC Santa Barbara -or- Boss -or- The El Dude Brothers -or- Jaysokker

Reserves: Best remaining pointscorers.
So, if Mighty Fine Feeling and/or the BFFA Cup Winners occupy a qualifying league position at the end of the season, the space(s) will be given to the team(s) with the most total matchpoints.
For example, if it were to end today, those honours would go to: The El Dude Brothers (5th in League One, 1605 FPts) and then Hung Like a Bony (4th in League One, 1542 FPts).
Of course, in the remaining gameweeks league positions and the Best-ish standings will likely change, opening those reserve spots to other teams. Watch this space. Also, the BFFA Cup Final will be played in the final gameweek and may also affect the outcome for the teams below.
