Winter Cup – First Round Results

BFFA Cup 2020

The Cup is underway!

Seven teams have been knocked out. Two sides are going to a replay. Thirty-three teams still alive. It’s early days and there’s already plenty of drama, especially if you like penalty misses.

Atletico Topo Chico 36 – 21 Goleta Hotspur

Newcomers Atletico Topo Chico enjoyed double success this week, beating Bielsaball in the League and Goleta in the Cup. Ross Barkley scored an injury-time winner for Villa and ATC, and three clean sheets saw them breeze into the Second Round. Danny Ings’ 43rd-minute goal was only a consolation in a disappointing week for a 9-man Goleta side that included Mitrovic and his penalty miss.
Atletico Topo Chico, currently seventh in League Two, will now face the Premier League’s Mighty fine feeling in the Second Round.

BattleVAR Galáctico 28 – 35 East Loop United

East Loop United, the 2017 runners-up, had a fairly quiet week on the scoresheet with zero goals and Ross Barkley on the bench. But despite not scoring nor collecting any assists, three clean sheets from Coady, Mings and Tarkowski did enough to see them through to the next round, and also collect three points in their League game against Banana Swans too.
First half goals from Michael Keane and Raheem Sterling couldn’t help BattleVAR get back into the fight. Richarlison’s sending off at the end of the Merseyside Derby damaged their chances, but ultimately was not a deciding factor in a low-scoring week for the League One side.
East Loop progress to face an AC Reykjavik side that are bottom of the Premier League, but have scored better than the four teams above them and also better than ELU.

Bielsaball 21 – 21 Boss

In the lowest-scoring tie of the round, there was nothing to separate the two sides. Bielsaball, bottom of League Two having not won since Week 2, had two defensive clean sheets from Conor Coady and Charlie Taylor, but were undone by Davinson Sanchez’s 85th minute own goal against West Ham. Boss, who are also starting to develop a losing streak, had a very plain week with all eleven players scoring just 1, 2 or 3 points. They may be watching the games back today and wondering what if Antonio didn’t pick up a yellow card, what if Aguero took that shot instead of Sterling, what if Leeds hadn’t conceded…
The match will be replayed this weekend (GW6) where Bielsaball‘s Klich and Bamford will be playing top-of-the-League Aston Villa on Friday night. Alisson and Heaton are still out injured and Martial is suspended until 7th November. For Boss, Aguero and Bernardo Silva will be back early on Saturday to take on West Ham and TAA will be hoping for a clean sheet at home against a Sheffield United team that have only scored twice in the PL this season.

Fossvogur FC 44 – 33 Wijnaldum Leviosa

The third of the BFFA Cup debutants also had a successful week in the Cup knocking out the 2019 runners-up, with goals from Marcus Rashford (12pts) & Raheem Sterling (6), plus a good week with Sam Johnstone in goal (7) and Willy Boly collecting a clean sheet too. Unfortunately for Fossvogur, despite all of that, they lost their League game (50-44 v K&R) with the second-highest losing score of the week. But that doesn’t matter here.
Fossvogur saw off an early goal from Mane assisted by Robertson, and Ederson’s clean sheet, to set up a Second Round tie against ASG, fourth in the Premier League and tenth in the Best-ish table.

SB Town Baggers 39 – 40 Chicken and Bacon Sane

The game of the week was decided by a penalty at St. James’ Park. In a hugely pivotal moment, Karl Darlow’s save from Bruno Fernandes’ penalty saved C&B Sane from a 13-point loss and gave them a 1-point win instead.
This was also a rematch of a First Round fixture in Season 2, where SB Town beat ChickBac (then Gadagnome FC) 45-21 before going on to win the Cup. But as you have read, it wasn’t a repeat of the result as this year the League One side claimed revenge and recorded just their second Cup win in seven seasons! Now third in the League and on a 4-game winning streak in all competitions, Salah, Mahrez and co. will play Web City in the Second Round, just two short weeks after comfortably beating them 40-30 in the League this week!

Sporting Wicker Park 29 – 32 Vanishing Spray FC

Vanishing Spray quickly made up for falling at the first hurdle last season, despite having not one but two penalties saved and a man sent off last weekend! Two late Man United goals covered for the negative points and The Spray handed Wicker their first-ever First Round defeat. Wicker may be cursing themselves for leaving Aaron Wan-Bissaka (8pts) on the bench, while Spray kept him in their starting XI.
Both teams have played in all 7 seasons in the BFFA. This was their thirteenth meeting, but the first time outside of the Premier League and the first since Season 4. This win for Spray brought the H2H record level – now both W6D1L6.
Vanishing Spray now move on to arguably the toughest tie of the Second Round – the undefeated Jaysokker of League Two.

Sugar Daddies 29 – 36 Mighty fine feeling

The only team in the First Round to collect on Timo Werner’s brace of goals, Sugar Daddies, got their first League win of the season this weekend, but 29 wasn’t enough to get them through to the next round of the Cup. Nine-man Mff profited from Calvert-Lewin’s equaliser against Liverpool and Ross Barkley’s winner against Leicester. Mighty fine will be playing Topo Chico in the next round in two weeks time.

Sugar Daddies:
Goals: Werner (15′, 28′)
Sent Off: Dunk (93′)

The Globes FC 20 – 56 Harambe Hotspur F.C.

These two have already met this season – in League One, Gameweek 2. Harambe walked away as winners then, 47-30, and did it again here too. In both games, Kane and Zaha have both found the net; in GW2, Kane also got 4 assists! This week, just the one. There was also two United goals for Harambe from Maguire and Rashford to take them over the 50pts mark.
Next up, Harambe face Wijnaldum, bottom of League One, as a warm-up to their Cup tie against Bigger than Brolin – 2017 Winners and currently top of the Premier League.
