The Belyea Cup
Welcome back to The Belyea Memorial Cup, ‘Rewarding Excellence in Its Many Forms’, where everyone is a winner (except one).
The game is simple – if you get the best score of the remaining teams, you escape.
Each week at least one team gets out, sometimes more, because they are excellent!
▲ You get up to 38 gameweeks to remove yourself from consideration. ▲
▼🏆▼ The last team to be eliminated… gets the Belyea Cup. ▼🏆▼
If there’s more than one team left after the final gameweek then they all, you know, jointly receive this unique award!
The thirteenth team to leave the tournament are Atletico Topo Chico. Lucky for them!
In Week Fourteen: 25 teams – Barons, Boss, Farkelife, Gloopy Yarbles, Housewives Favourite, Mighty fine feeling, Route 57 FC, Sporting Wicker Park, AFC Chester, Allison Wonderland, Fergi Time, GoFYS FC, Vanishing Spray FC, BattleVAR Galactico, CG XI, FC Santa Barbara, Peltier, Uncle Monty, Whiskey de Bruyne, Boudi’s Crew, Harambe Hotspur, Jaysokker, Ole’s at the wheel, SkyPlayerInFPL, The Phenoms.
The Big One
It’s the BFFA Big One. The tried and tested (albeit inferior) traditional form of English Fantasy Football that requires each manager to build a team with a budget of £150,000,000. These teams must have no more than three players from any PL club, excessive transfers are penalised by point deductions, and everyone gets a Haaland (if they want one). Every team also gets to pick a Captain and there are bonus chips to play across the season – Wildcards, a Bench Boost, a Free Hit and Triple Captain points. This is a classic-style fantasy league, open to all BFFA managers past and present.
Gloopy Yarbles remain top of The Big One tonight, but their lead has been reduced by eight. Peltier and Jaysokker moved up as Smoky Bacon and Ampadu-du-du dropped down again. The latter fell by two, which meant that Alleviate the Tedium returned to their highest-reach so far, back up to fifth.
Our guest star scored fourth-best this week (see the green bar) and it was a pretty low-scoring week all round. But it was a great week for Kinder Mbuemo, the only team to make 60 FPts. Antony Gordon and Haaland helped them climb five places and twenty-one points closer to the leaders.
BattleVAR also found fortune at the feet of last week’s guest Antony Gordon, regaining a lot of lost ground on Goleta, SWP and DCL. You Beto Believe It, who Bossed the league last week, had another heroic weekend with the (joint-)second best total of GW13, 59 (also helped along by AG), lifting them right back from fifteenth to ninth in two weeks. Funnily enough, AG did not play AG.
On top of hosting a league for the BFFA faithful, we are also involving some unsuspecting stars of the game in our classic league. This week, to mark the international break that just passed, we are “inviting” in a star playing in the lower leagues, specifically League One’s Shane Lavery.
Unfortunately, Shane hasn’t been present for the last five games, but you might remember me saying that he scored a great goal in the FA Cup just a few weeks ago, so here it is:
Blackpool score two beauties in Bromley FA Cup win | BBC Sport
Blackpool move to the Second Round to face Forest Green, who won a 5-2 thriller in a replay last month. While being rested, he is still maintaining his FPL team, I’d Lav to Win. They are currently 2nd in the Blackpool players’ H2H league, ahead of fellow Evertonian Luke Garbutt but behind another ex-Toffee in Callum Connelly.
We feel a bit bad after what happened to Everton during the PL pause. I promise we had nothing to do with it. So to show our support for the Toffees in these dark times, we will be joined next week by someone who is a bit of a legend on Merseyside. A former Toffee who made a total of 433 appearances for the Blues (matching Dixie Dean in tenth overall) and the most appearances for Everton in the Premier League (352), scoring 43 Premier League goals between 2000-2016. He is also known for scoring Everton’s Goal of the Season in 2007/08.
He now earns a crust as a pundit for the BBC, Sky and TNT. He is ever-present when Everton have a big game or big news. He has been vocal about the sanctions recently imposed on Everton by The Premier League and insists that the club have done everything they can to comply and co-operate with the Premier League. We have seen the protests, and we will wait to see what the Premier League do next.
In the meanwhile, here’s to an undramatic week and we hope you don’t suffer any big deductions too.
See you next week! 🥳
