The Belyea Cup

Welcome back to The Belyea Memorial Cup, ‘Rewarding Excellence in Its Many Forms’, where everyone is a winner (except one).
The game is simple – if you get the best score of the remaining teams, you escape.
Each week at least one team gets out, sometimes more, because they are excellent!

You get up to 38 gameweeks to remove yourself from consideration.
🏆 The last team to be eliminated… gets the Belyea Cup. 🏆
If there’s more than one team left after the final gameweek then they all, you know, jointly receive this unique award!

After a dozen attempts, Webuiltthis City found four players that made double-figures and grabbed themselves a top score. Bonus.

In Week Thirteen: 26 teams – Barons, Boss, Farkelife, Gloopy Yarbles, Housewives Favourite, Mighty fine feeling, Route 57 FC, Sporting Wicker Park, AFC Chester, Allison Wonderland, Atletico Topo Chico, Fergi Time, GoFYS FC, Vanishing Spray FC, BattleVAR Galactico, CG XI, FC Santa Barbara, Peltier, Uncle Monty, Whiskey de Bruyne, Boudi’s Crew, Harambe Hotspur, Jaysokker, Ole’s at the wheel, SkyPlayerInFPL, The Phenoms.

The Big One

You Beto Believe It, 2023/24

It’s the BFFA Big One. The tried and tested (albeit inferior) traditional form of English Fantasy Football that requires each manager to build a team with a budget of £150,000,000. These teams must have no more than three players from any PL club, excessive transfers are penalised by point deductions, and everyone gets a Haaland (if they want one). Every team also gets to pick a Captain and there are bonus chips to play across the season – Wildcards, a Bench Boost, a Free Hit and Triple Captain points. This is a classic-style fantasy league, open to all BFFA managers past and present.

Top scorers this week are declared Everton fans –
You Beto Believe It!
They have had four top-10k finishes in the FPL (the highest being #2,098 in 2016 [applause]) and they moved up over 900,000 places with their green arrow this week. That moved them up three places in The Big One and well within reach of the top four.

That top four however remain very competitive, all with 80+ scores, and Gloopy increase their lead at the top to twenty clear points. Now in second place is Smoky Bacon, closely followed by Peltier & the ever-present Ampadu-du-du just two points behind.

Also note the superb effort by BFFA newcomers De Bruyne Trousers, hitting 90 with a big push from Captain Salah & Tsimikas, and moving out of the bottom three.

On top of hosting a league for the BFFA faithful, we are also involving some unsuspecting stars of the game in our classic league. This week we are “inviting” in Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon. The Liverpool-born left winger has put four shots away so far this season, including the only goal of the game against Arsenal last week and one of the fourteen that went past Wes Foderingham in September. Managing under his psuedonym Johnny Drama (and verified by Fplbot), AG is last in the NUFC players league (and falling behind). But at least he has put faith in Trippier and Longstaff!

Anthony Gordon made his debut for the England Under-21’s two years ago, scoring twice in seven minutes in a 3-1 win over Czech Rep. in a qualification match for the U21’s European Championship. England qualified as Group Winners (with Czechia in second) and played the tournament in June and July this summer. England won the Euros with a 1-0 win over Spain. Gordon scored two in the earlier stages and was announced Player of the Tournament.

Next weekend will be an international break, so we are moving our spotlight onto League One. Gordon, of course, came through the Everton ranks and before he won the Euros with England, he had won the U23’s Premier League with the junior Toffees in 2019, under the management of Everton legend David Unsworth. Also in that squad was a Northern Irish international, now playing in the third tier. This attacking midfielder has moved from Everton to Blackpool, via the scenic route of Falkirk to the north and Linfield to the west.

He has scored goals across Europe, from Derry to Qarabag. He has won two league titles in Northern Ireland, one NI Cup, once Player of the Season (2021) and once the NI Premier League’s Golden Boot (also 2021). More recently he scored a beautiful bar-rattler in the FA Cup last week (which we will link for you in the next write-up). Before we return though, Blackpool have fixtures against Morecambe, Shrewsbury and top-of-the-league Portsmouth, so hopefully he finds the net again at least once in the next three (hopefully more than once against Pompey…!🤞)

Have a nice break! 🥳
