The First Round is over. We have four teams through (one from each division!), four teams out and four teams joining from the Champions League: East Loop United, Gloopy Yarbles, Gene’s Unicorn Reserves and Chucky Pad Warriors.
In a match that must’ve felt like deja-vu, FC Santa Barbara hit mid-50’s again and thrashed a Mourinho-lo side struggling to reach 30. Although it was an easy win for a Premier League team against League Two opposition, it’s only fair to say that FCSB scored highest of all eight teams this week, and across both legs, so would’ve knocked out any team that they faced. Next they will play East Loop United who are only one win and two places below them in the League.
In a similar result, Hung Like A Bony kept their form, also passing 50, to knock out the Premier League’s The Money Team. It was perhaps unsurprising that a team ranked sixth in the Best-ish table should make it through to the Quarter-Finals, but they had to beat the team second in the Premier League to do it. This upset has set-up a reunion with Gloopy Yarbles who played Hung five times in League Two last season. Gloopy won three, Hung won two and there were only nine matchpoints in it, Hung outscored the Yarbles 257-248 overall.
The closest tie of the round was between Boss’ Blues and Yer Man. The League One team, having led after the first leg, held their nerve and saw out the game 48-42. They will now play Gene’s Unicorn Reserves who were one of the top two teams in Group C until they lost to ASG in the final match. Once again there’s not much between the two teams at the moment, only 9 matchpoints between them so far this season.
Banana Swans are the sole representatives of the Championship in the Europa League now after a second (much narrower) win over Wijnaldum Leviosa. They will play Group D dropouts Chucky Pad Warriors in the Quarter-Finals. Both teams suffered heartache in the Last 8 of last year’s BFFA Cup and neither team has been to a Semi-Final in any competition yet. These next two weeks will give them that opportunity to make the Final Four.
