Mighty Fine Feeling -vs.- The El Dude Brothers

The 2021 Champions League Final was Mighty Fine Feeling’s second, while this was The El Dude Brothers first CL tournament. Both teams qualified from the Group Stage as group winners, despite looking unlikely to progress after losing two of their first three games. MFF qualified with the best points tally of all sixteen teams after that huge 91-35 win in Matchday 6; The El Dude Brothers were third-best.

Both teams were ready to begin the Final with Ivan Toney, albeit Brothers had sensibly put him to the back of the bench (probably) because he was to miss the Watford game due to testing positive for CoVid-19. Brentford beat the Championship runners-up 2-1 thanks to a late penalty, but Toney’s absence left a big gap up front of MFF.

Day Two kicked-off with Man City hosting a Wolves side who have been struggling to score, and were hampered further when Raul Jimenez saw red just before half-time. Jimenez, who was standing over a free kick that he had just conceded, and been booked for, refused to back off and blocked the retake from two yards away. He promptly picked up a second booking within the space of a minute and was seen off by the jeering Citizens. Also playing here in this season’s Champions League Final, Gündoğan played fifty-five minutes for Mighty Fine before being replaced by Phil Foden (who was starting for both teams) and Kevin de Bruyne also played the final twenty minutes. All three players picked up just one point each.

Three p.m. brought us three more games. Arsenal hosted Southampton at the Emirates, but without Aubameyang who was in the squad for both Finalists. In the absence of Auba, Jimenez started for The El Dude Brothers and negated the two points of Foden & de Bruyne. However, keeping goal for Bros was Arsenal’s new poster boy Aaron Ramsdale, who heroically kept the ball out with six saves and earned himself three bonus points too. Playing just in front of him was new signing Takehiro Tomiyasu who also shared in the glory of a clean sheet.

At Stamford Bridge, an uncharacteristically leaky Chelsea were again entertaining the crowds with plenty of goals at both ends. For the likes of Reece James and Thiago Silva on the back line for The El Dude Brothers this meant a loss of points and with James’ first half yellow card, the pair only returned a single point. For their opposition, Antonio Rudiger was having a little more success despite the two goals going in. Twice in the second half, Rudiger was fouled in the box and Jorginho converted both resulting PK’s into goals. As fouls leading to set-piece goals are technically assists, Rudiger picked up an extra six points, plus two bonus points too.

Mighty Fine Feeling also had one man playing at Anfield that afternoon. Trent Alexander-Arnold, FPL’s second-highest pointscorer, defending the Liverpool net against an Aston Villa side who had only twice failed to score so far this season. This week, however, both teams struggled to find the net. Despite having twenty shots on goal (including two from Alexander-Arnold) it took a penalty to break the deadlock and ultimately win the game. Trent, however, was rewarded for his efforts with a clean sheet and three bonus points, giving Mighty Fine Feeling a controlling lead going into the evening game.

In that evening game, four players lined up ready for a Cup Final. Jadon Sancho set out for both teams, and his sixty-six minutes were enough for a three-point appearance. Diogo Dalot collected a clean sheet for Brothers (also a yellow card), but De Gea and Victor Lindelöf also capitalised on Norwich’s failure to score for MFF. The Swedish defender picked up a Bonus Point for his efforts and the Spanish ‘keeper very nearly matched Ramsdale’s performance – earning three bonus points and miaking five saves, just one shy of his opponent.

Finally, with a thirteen-point lead and Callum Wilson to come, Mighty Fine Feeling finished the gameweek on Sunday when Leicester shut out Newcastle at the King Power. Harvey Barnes was the last remaining player to try to bridge the gap for El Dude, but could only manage an assist for Patson Daka before being substituted off fourteen minutes later. Mighty Fine Feeling are crowned Champions League Winners for the second time and all being well they will defend their title this time next year.
