The Champions League is back baby, yeah!
Boss and The Money Team showed their class this week, both hitting over 40 points and topping their groups early on.
FC Santa Barbara and KH Granitza Sting both scored 39 and top the other two groups. Closely behind FCSB, AFC Chester put some ghosts to rest by finally getting a win over Tralfamadore Zoo and start in second, with only one matchpoint less.
Route 57 had the lowest-scoring win of the first matchday, but will be happy with getting a win in their first-ever CL match.
The two other teams entering their maiden CL – Cabezazo Increíble and Hung Like a Bony had very different weeks, but unfortunately both came up against the top scorers in their groups.
Branwellington got their first win over Vanishing Spray with a handsome 38-33 “away” win and Bigger than Brolin also got their first win over Mighty Fine Feeling at the third attempt.
Matchday 2
Group A
Smash & Grab Vs. Vanishing Spray F.C.
These two are meeting for the second time in two weeks and having played out the first draw this season, there are double boasting rights to play for here. This will be the tenth time these two have met. Vanishing Spray have had the best of it, W5 D1 L3, but have only scored better by 12. In the League so far however, Smash are second and Vanishing Spray are a lowly seventh. But don’t let that fool you, Vanishing Spray have been scoring better.
Branwellington F.C. Vs. The Money Team
Fate has put together the two teams that won last weekend. These two last shared a League in 2016/17 when Money finished second and were promoted to the Premier League; Branwellington finished 7th. That year Money beat Branwellington three times and lost once. This year they’ll meet twice, this weekend and GW9. This week Branwellington go into the fixture ranked 49th in the (5-wk old) Best-ish table; Money are 5th.
Group B
Bigger than Brolin Vs. Boss
We mentioned in the last article that this week’s Group B games have already been played out in the Premier League. This one happened in Week One and Boss stormed it 54-37. Since then, Boss has won two, lost two; Brolin have won three, lost one. Both won their CL match last week so this will be classed as a top-of-the-table clash-of-the-titans. Let’s hope it lives up to its billing,
All Star Gunners Vs. Mighty Fine Feeling
Another repeat match in the second weekend of the CL. It was another high-scoring game, this time more recently in GW4, MFF comfortably took the win 55-31. All-in-all, they’ve now played each other six times. ASG won the first three, MFF won the most recent three. Currently, the two teams sit at opposite ends of the table; MFF are still sitting top, ASG are ninth.
Group C
F.C. Santa Barbara Vs. Tralfamadore Zoo F.C.
I always like it when two teams meet each other for the first time, writing a new chapter, developing the game and the League. Here we have two teams that won trophies last season – the Europa League Champions against the League One Champions. Top of the Championship tonight, Tralfamadore Zoo are looking good to go up again, whilst FCSB are treading water in eighth place.
AFC Chester Vs. Hung Like a Bony
Chester come into this game hot off the back of big wins in the CL and the League. They are still second in the Championship but only by a mere 4 matchpoints! Hung LAB had a cruel GW5, losing by exactly the same score in both games. However, 36 wasn’t a bad score (the average across the BFFA last week was only 33.3) and a win here should be enough to move them up into (at least) second place.
Group D
Sporting Wicker Park Vs. K.H. Granitza Sting F.C
It’s hard to know where to begin with this matchup. It’s probably best to begin by saying that we are seeing the 2017 CL Runners-up against the 2015 CL Champions. They’ve faced each in CL competition before, in 2016 they both qualified from Group D (SWP in 1st place, KHGS in 2nd), but both were knocked out in the Quarters. Had they won, they’d have faced each other again in the Semis.
Later that season, Wicker Park knocked Granitza Sting out of the BFFA Cup in an amazing 81-62 barn burner. Unfortunately, they were knocked out themselves in the next round. Overall, SWP are 7-5 against KH and have won the last five. But anyway, back to the present. KH are top of League One, on 12 points, and SWP are 7th in the Championship having just beaten the team at the bottom.
Cabezazo Increíble Vs. Route 57 F.C.
These two battled hard last season, finishing the season as League Two Champions and Runners-up. To kick off the new season in their new home they played each other in GW1 and finished the weekend as the top two scoring teams in League One. Cabezazo won this high-scoring opener 54-49.
They will go into this match having the exact same League record – 3 wins with 162 matchpoints! However, R57 is the form team coming in to the game, they’ve won the last three (League & CL); Cabezazo have lost their last three.
Gameweek 6
The next Gameweek is a Friday kickoff! It’s Southampton against Bournemouth in a South Coast something-that-isn’t-quite-a-derby, and finishes on Sunday (thank goodness, I hate waiting for Monday late games to finish!) with Arsenal -v- Villa and a potential thriller between Chelsea & Liverpool.
