Champions League – Matchday 4 Results

CL Purple Stars

Group A

An outstanding day for Mickey van de Ven kept Sporting Wicker Park from taking control of Group A at the international break. The Dutch centre-back scored his first Premier League goal in his eighth appearance for Spurs, the only goal of the game, meaning that he also collected a clean sheet and the maximum bonus points. The result means that CG XI got their second win in the group and have a much more competitive FPts total. They remain third tonight as Allison go top and SWP still have a differential advantage.

A 32-23 victory over Mighty fine feeling came in thanks to assists from the ever-generous boots of Neto, Coufal and also Havertz setting up the late winner against City. The Premier League champions produced little to counter the target, they had no clean sheets and scored an own goal but they did see a rare Nicolas Jackson goal cross the line that was, as in the game at Turf Moor, nothing more than a consolation. In the same game Burnley got a goal, but Lyle Turner remained on the MFF bench with his assist.

Allison Wonderland move up to first place; Sporting Wicker Park now second. CG XI now level with two wins but a little behind on matchpoints. MFF will need more than a win to move off the bottom and with only two games to go they need a little help from the Wonderlanders in their remaining games also.

Group B

Before Fergi Time stormed to a 17-point victory last week, Gloopy Yarbles were undefeated here (2-0) and second in the Premier League. When they lost that 109-point barnburner, they knew they had to turn the tables in order to challenge for the Champions League again. They did that last week in some style, by doubling FT’s efforts and producing the top score of the matchday with Isak and Salah hitting double-figures once again. A 28-point win means that the returning finalists are joint-first this week and the next two weeks could give an exciting group battle.

Both A.F.C. Chester and Barons are having trouble scoring points in the first quarter of the season, and it’s prevented both of them from taking any points away from Fergi or Gloopy. Luckily for the Barons they have twice been the better of the two and are still in the competition, although they desperately need some more points from the next two matches. For Chester, however, with four losses from four games, the Champions League will end after the international break.

Group C

Championship champions Housewives Favourite’s winning streak in the CL came to an end against Athletico Topo Chico last weekend. Wives’ Fave were smart enough to move Pau Torres off the bench and into the starting line-up for 10 FPts (while ATC moved him the other way!), but Hwang Hee-chan did the business at Molyneux and Romero & Nunes did the rest for the Chicos.

Coming back after a 20-point win over Whiskey de Bruyne last week, Smash & Grab were just a yellow card shy of repeating that feat. In retrospect, Smash & Grab didn’t even need Raheem Sterling’s sixteen to win the game, but they got their three points in style and are now just a draw from the Quarter-Finals thanks to Pedro Porro, Ollie Watkins and co.

Group D

De Bruyne Trousers are the only team in the Champions League with a 100% record after four games. For the second week in a row they beat Uncle Monty by nine points, and for the second week in a row they had a player scoring ten. The previous matchweek it was Carlton Morris against Everton & Burnley, this time it was Pau Torres as the differencemaker.

Duking it out once again, Hung Like a Bony and El Dude Bros played out what was undoubtedly the game of the week. After being humiliated by a sixty-point thrashing in MD3, the El Dude Bros regrouped, faced their disgracers and found their dignity once more. They walked away with the win, but only just, Bros nearly missed out on the win by only having ten players to field, but they did enough. Both teams were rewarded for giving Cole Palmer a run out and both passed the week’s average, so if fingers are going to be pointed, Almirón’s yellow card for standing over a free kick looks disasterous.
