Matchday 4 – Group Tables

Things are starting to take shape now. As you can see from the tables above, we already have one team guaranteed a place in the Quarter-Finals. It will surprise absolutely no-one to see that it’s the holders Mighty Fine Feeling who are patting themselves on the back after their fourth win in a row. In fact, unless the BayCobblers can drastically turn the tables, MFF will qualify in first place.

Their Quarter-Final opponents however will remain a mystery until after the final match of this round because the Group of Death lives up to its name (I think), as there is nothing but pure matchpoints to separate the teams. All four teams have now won two and lost two; Smash & Grab and Bigo1 swapping blows over the last two games, both winning at home, while Bigger Than Brolin do the double over the Gloopy Yarbles.

The staff at Tralfamadore Zoo must’ve enjoyed some squeaky bum time this week, drawing against rivals DC LFC in the League but “squeaking” past Gene’s Unicorn Reserves by a single point, just a week after tying with them too! ASG topscore in the Group again to turn their winless start into a competitive challenge.

Goleta Hotspur will be disappointed with their result. They register the second-highest-ever losing score in the Champions League. Both Goleta and PSV had AFC Bournemouth strikers scoring double-figures, both hit 5 clean sheets and they will meet again in the League in gameweek 10. DC LFC also won to keep the pressure on the top two and Chucky Pad are also still in the hunt, only one win behind.

Next weekend:
Group A
AC Reykjavik BayCobblers -v- RelicFC
In Matchday 2: Relic FC 57-59 AC Reykjavik BayCobblers
After that high-scoring game last time this pair met, both teams will be looking to repeat their performances in the rematch. A win for Reykjavik would put them into the next round if the Feeling keep their winning streak going. A win for Relic would move them into second and put their fate in their own hands.

East Loop United FC -v- Mighty Fine Feeling
In Matchday 2: Mighty Fine Feeling 47-32 East Loop United FC
Despite United’s low scores in the Champions League, they have the potential to upset the bookies. They’ve beaten fellow CL teams BTB, Bigo1 and Gene’s URs in the Premier League already and smashed FC Santa Barbara 53-35 in gameweek one. MFF lost their Championship match last week, but have only once scored below the 44 average this season.

Group B
Bigo1 -v- Bigger Than Brolin
In Matchday 2: Bigger Than Brolin 46-47 Bigo1
Last week BTB took three points from their Premier League match with Bigo1. Next week they will meet a third time in a six-pointer for a qualification place. A win here will seem doubly important to both teams as they both lost to Gloopy and Smash respectively in match #1.

Smash & Grab -v- Gloopy Yarbles
In Matchday 2: Gloopy Yarbles 46-44 Smash & Grab
In another close game from Matchday 2, Gloopy Yarbles made it 2-from-2 in the CL. However, they’re 0-2 here since then, losing both games to the 2017 BFFA Cup winners BTB. Recent results may favour the only non-Premier League team to qualify from this quagmire, but the Best-ish table would suggest that Smash & Grab can walk it from here.

Group C
Tralfamadore Zoo FC -v- All Star Gunners
In Matchday 2: All Star Gunners 39-44 Tralfamadore Zoo
This looks like a must-win game for ASG. They’re a point behind GUR in the Group; a loss to the group leaders could see them knocked out if the Unicorn Reserves win. A win for ASG however would put them a point behind Tralfamadore Zoo and could upset their early-stage celebrations. For the Zoo, it would take a strange turn of events for them to miss out on the next stage, but nothing’s certain yet.

Gene’s Unicorn Reserves -v- Vanishing Spray FC
In Matchday 2: Vanishing Spray FC 37-72 Gene’s Unicorn Reserves
Vanishing Spray brought the second-highest score of the Group for the second week in a row and for the second week in a row their opponents ASG scored better. Unfortunately, with only two games to go, this puts them out of reach of the top two places. There is, however, a Europa League place available for whoever finishes third in each Group, and that is still on the table for the team fourth in the Premier League. The Unicorn Reserves, bottom of the Premier League, could seal their place in the next round if they win here and ASG lose.

Group D
PSV Wide Open -v- Chucky Pad Warriors
In Matchday 2: Chucky Pad Warriors 38-58 PSV Wide Open
In-form PSV have won three on the trot in both the CL and the Championship. Chucky Pad have won one and lost one in both of their last two Prem and CL games – all four games decided by only four points or less. This could be a close game, but anything short of a win for Chucky Pad would mean they’re out.

Goleta Hotspur -v- DC LFC
In Matchday 2: DC LFC 34-41 Goleta Hotspur
In the final match of the week, League One DC LFC visit Hollister Avenue with both sides on six points. When DC drew with Tralfamadore Zoo in the League last week (for a second consecutive season), it was their first point in three games. Similarly last week, Goleta won their first League game for three weeks. Neither team will be happy with another draw here although Goleta, with the better matchpoints total, would have the easier game in the final match.

Matchday 5 begins on Saturday 20th October with Chelsea -v- Man Utd, which finished 1-0 to Chelsea last season. It ends on Monday 22nd with Arsenal -v- Leicester, which was 4-3 to Arsenal.
