There were a few close games this week. Gloopy Yarbles got cup revenge on the team that knocked them out last year – League rivals, Yer Man – in a 42-41 thriller. Gloopy have beaten Yer Man in all three meetings this season, but despite beginning the week in 4th and 7th in League Two and having a matchpoint differential of over 100MP, Yer Man are only one win behind Gloopy and they will meet again in three weeks.
Hung Like a Bony also scraped a very narrow win against AFC Chester in a 90-point game that finished 46-44, with a brace from Salah and two assists from Mount. This game made it three wins from three over the team second in the Championship and booked them an appearance in the Third Round for the first time.
Obi-Wan Bissaka returned to their giant-killing ways by knocking out another one of the top seeds in another two-pointer this week. Current holders Smash & Grab, 2nd in the top flight and the 3rd-best pointscorers of the season so far, were gently edged out of the competition in the Second Round by just 37 to 35.
With the current champions bowing out of the competition, a lot of smaller, less-successful teams will feel like there is a much better chance of them going all the way to the Final and what better way to make a statement of intent than to knock out one of the favourites? The headlines would probably focus on the cupset that saw KH Granitza Sting, ranked 2nd, go out to the lowest-ranked team still in the Cup, BattleVAR Galáctico.
And that wasn’t the only other upset of the round as the #1-ranked Best-ish team, a side that passed 1000 matchpoints this week – Tralfamadore Zoo, were knocked out by their Premier League overlords Boss. Boss, who would’ve won the 2018 Cup Final had they won their Semi-Final, comfortably beat the 2018 Winners 54-38 and could even go into the Third Round draw later this month as the highest-ranked remaining team, if things go well over the next three weeks.
One rank below Boss, FC Santa Barbara began the week top of the Premier League and sixth in the overall rankings. They faced a very difficult match against a Harambe Hotspur side that are top of League Two and just three places below them in the Best-ish table. Both have made previous appearances in the BFFA Cup Semi-Finals but they couldn’t both go through this year. It was last season’s Europa League winners FC Santa Barbara that go into the Third Round draw after nearly doubling Harambe’s score.
The battle of the Best-ish behemoths was another close affair this week. The two Premier League rivals Mighty fine feeling and Bigo1 have scored over 20,000 matchpoints between them (including over 1,000 matchpoints in the Cup alone), but have only met four times before this weekend. The first time they crossed paths was in the 2018 BFFA Cup and Bigo1 knocked out Mff with a 55-39 Third Round win. Bigo1 won the Best-ish title that year but lost in the Cup Final to Tralfamadore Zoo.
This season, Bigo1 won their first encounter with Mff in the Premier League, but Mff won the last two and again this week, 35-32, getting some revenge for 2018. Mighty fine feeling have never failed to make the Last 16 and will go into the next draw as one of the favourites for the title.
One team that has never made the Last 16, Route 57 FC, did it at the third attempt, and got there by beating two-time Champions SB Town Baggers. Last season’s League Two champions won both their Cup and League games this week, despite seeing Gundogan’s penalty saved and not scoring any goals. Sometimes, a good defence is all you need!
Two other League One teams booked their place in the Third Round draw. Webuitthis City managed to survive a low-scoring match against a team they faced in last season’s Championship. Sporting Wicker Park took away seven points from their games with Web City last season, but they had a bad weekend this week and couldn’t stand up to a weak effort from the League One side.
The other L1 team to pass the challenge had a tougher fight. stilluvQPR took on Sugar Daddies, who are struggling in League Two but had been on a four-game winning streak, and both teams turned up for the Cup, both reaching above-average scores. Both teams have been to the BFFA Cup Quarter-Finals (stilluvQPR in 2017 and Sugar Daddies in 2019) and both teams won their First Round games this year by a single point. This week, in their first meeting, stilluvQPR walked through as victors with a 48-40 win and they will have a go at getting to the Quarter-Finals again in Gameweek 28.
After the departure of SB Town Baggers, Tralfamadore Zoo and Smash & Grab, Bigger than Brolin’s win over DS7 means that they are the last remaining former winners of the competition. BtB have only made it past the Second Round once before and this win should silence any critics, but another win may be necessary to really prove their mettle.
The Third Round draw will take place on Monday 24th February and games will be played on Gameweek 29. Replays will be played on Gameweek 30.
