There were a few records broken last week.
Until this year the highest-scoring First Round game was played out between Wijnaldum Leviosa and Hung Like a Bony two years ago and it ended in a draw, 53-53. Wijnadum won the replay 56-44. This year Bigo1 came out winners in a 109-point match; Jaysokker the unfortunate recipient of a 63-46 beating. 46 would have been the highest losing score in the BFFA Cup First Round if there wasn’t an even unluckier competitor this week.
Earlier this season, Cornballers beat SB Town Baggers home and away in the First Round of the Intramural Cup on their way to winning the tournament. Last week, the two-time BFFA Cup Winners got their revenge and knocked Cornballers out in one big hit. In what would have been a hugely entertaining match to watch, Cornballers scored 55 with goals from Hudson-Odoi, Ayew and Firmino. But 55 wasn’t enough, SBTB’s score of sixty made Cornballers record-breakers in a very undesirable way. No team has gone out in the First Round after having scored so much. This game also became the highest-scoring First Round match to date.
At the other end of the scale, one match also saw some records broken for tiny scores. Voyageurs and Chicken and Bacon Sané crossed paths for the first time in three years. Last time they met they both had different names and they shared a League. CaBS (then playing as ‘Gadagnome FC‘) won their first encounter, but lost the next four to what was Gene’s Unicorn Reserves. That streak continued in a very strange way this season as Voyageurs qualified for the Second Round with the lowest-ever winning score in BFFA Cup history. On top of that but CaBS grabbed their coats after putting up the smallest total in BFFA Cup history. Combined, this also registered as the lowest-scoring game in the competition. Let’s hope for better things in the next round!
We have already mentioned last season’s Runners-Up, Wijnaldum Leviosa. This year they are competing in their fourth BFFA Cup and they have not yet failed to make the Quarter-Finals. It was in the QF of the Cup in their first season that they last played East Loop United. In 2017, ELU beat Wijnaldum by the narrowest of margins, 38-37. ELU went on to beat Mighty fine feeling in the Semis, but lost in the Final to Bigger than Brolin. Had Wijnaldum won that QF, they would’ve actually gone on to win the Cup. History aside, Wijnaldum got their own back on ELU last week with a 20-point victory and go into the Second Round draw alongside MFF, Bigger than Brolin and current Champions Smash & Grab.
Finally, on the topic of big wins, a big record was broken this week in a big way. The biggest winning margin before this season’s Cup was achieved by Chucky Pad Warriors when they knocked out Boss’s Blues last year in a game that finished 66-30. Chucky Pad were themselves knocked in the next round by PSV Wide Open (who made it as far as the Semi-Finals where they were beaten 72-50 by the eventual Champions Smash & Grab). PSV, now rebranded as Webuiltthis City, registered a mighty 51-point victory despite only playing with ten men, beating newcomers Chi Spurs 63-12. Boosted by the five goals from Aguero and Mahrez last weekend, two assists and three clean sheets, Web City booked themselves a place in the Second Round and will try to emulate the Cup run they enjoyed last season.
