Third Round Fixtures

Gameweek 25

The next round of the Cup has begun with Brighton hosting Chelsea, a mere five days after knocking them out of the FA Cup at the Amex last weekend! It will be the return match of the GW6 six-goal thriller that saw Cole Palmer find the net four times and bag 25FPts.

Following the Seagulls, Leicester are looking for some revenge for a 4-2 spanking of their own. It was 2-2 at 90+3′, before an Ndidi own goal and a 99th-minute Havertz finisher stole the points away from the Foxes. Man United are re-grouping ahead of another meeting with Spurs; 10-man Man United lost 3-0 to Spurs at Old Trafford in GW6, and then lost again in the EFL Cup QF in December. They will be seeking a better result against Tottenham in turmoil on Saturday. And Ipswich led at Villa in September, but also had to come from behind against Villa to chalk up a fourth consecutive draw. They come into this rematch having just broken a four-game losing streak with a Cup win against Coventry City.

We will also have an additional game to navigate through. Due to the League Cup finalists being decided earlier this week, Liverpool have brought their visit to Villa Park forward to Wednesday 19th February, with the Premier League tacking it onto the end of GW25.

The Third Round draw has been made and, unusually, it has not produced any same-league fixtures. After the big purge that is Round Two, there are only three Premier League teams remaining – #1 Gloopy Yarbles, third-placed mighty Fine, and former champions Route 57.

All three teams currently in League Two’s promotion places are still in the game. Boudi’s Crew have been given an opportunity for a giant-killing by fixing an away day against Premier League leaders Gloopy.

There are seven teams who have never made it past the Third Round, and they are all playing more successful teams next weekend, so there is no guarantee that any of them will be improving on their Cup history. However, as four of them are in the top ten rankings tonight, it would be a huge surprise if none of them progressed.

The only remaining previous winners are mighty Fine, who are looking for a fourth Quarter-Final appearance. In order to get there, they will need to knock out League Two champions Goleta Hotspur. Goleta have won their last three games against MFF, although that was back in 2018-19, and they went to the Semi-Finals last season. Mighty Fine are also the most-experienced in the BFFA Cup of the Last 16, having played in 24 cup ties, winning 15 and scoring a total 1,131 matchpoints (the sixth-most all-time in each category).
