Champions League Final – Round 1

The World Cup is over and as the Premier League players return to cold and wintery training here in the UK, we have two outstanding results to bring you – the Champions League Final and the Intramural League Final.

– The Champions League Final –
Gloopy Yarbles kicked off the match with four Man City players at home to Brentford. It was Phil Foden that got the Final rolling when he arrived in the box at the end of the first half to meet a de Bruyne cross and fire it home for a Man City equalizer.
The Championship leaders took 13-0 lead into the 3pm’s.

That afternoon there were nine players featured in the second set of games. Both teams shared the fortunes of Andrew Robertson who, unfortunately lost his clean sheet within ten minutes to a Che Adams strike, but did create two goals as Liverpool took the win 3-1.

Daka added another assist for Gloopy, forwarding on a short cross from Yarbles teammate Dewsbury-Hall into the path of the oncoming James Maddison in the eighth minute. The same pass could have also benefitted Fergi Time, had they not left Daka on the bench. Five points went wanting, and would have been very well welcomed in the place of Wilf Zaha.

Approaching half-time at the City Ground, Wilf Zaha was brought down in the penalty box and given the opportunity to try again himself from the spot. However, he put the ball wide left of the goal with Henderson diving the wrong way. A seven-point swing could have proved very costly, but Fergi went back in after the games only one point further adrift – at 5pm Gloopy were winning 30-16.

Saturday offered two seperate evening games, but Wolves v Arsenal made no contribution to the Champions League Final; only Kieran Tierney sitting unused on both the Gunners’ and Yarbles’ benches. So it was upto Joe Willock to make an impact on the game.

Again, both teams had selected the same player, this time in Nick Pope, who heroically kept a clean sheet against a Chelsea side who had won all four of their previous meetings without conceding a goal to the Magpies. He did pick up a yellow card in the 95th minute, but this didn’t affect the Final. The fuse was ignited in the 67th minute when Almiron somewhat awkwardly controlled the ball into the Chelsea D and Willock ran onto it and fired home past World Cup-bound Mendy. It was the only goal of the game, Willock earned three bonus points and the day finished Gloopy Yarbles: 35, Fergi Time: 32.

Sunday opened with Brighton against Aston Villa, Trossard & Welbeck for Fergi Time versus Digne & Bailey for Gloopy Yarbles. Digne’s clean sheet disappeared within fifty seconds of the kickoff.
Not a lot more happened in the game. Late in the second half Bailey was subbed on, and got himself booked within six minutes of taking to the field. Seconds before that Trossard had a 30-yard effort saved by Emi Martinez. Gloopy Yarbles made two points from the match and finished on 37 points. Fergi Time, trailing by two, had one player left to come. That player was Andreas Pereira playing against his former club, Man United.

Brazilian Pereira, who had scored a penalty against Man City the week before, needed to bring home three points to win the Champions League. Unfortunately for them, Christian Eriksen opened the scoring for United in the first quarter of the game and took away his clean sheet point. He played for the full ninety minutes and kept his name out of the book, but had no other impact on the game. He earned two for his appearance and the 2022 Champions League Final ended in a draw, 37-37.

The Final was replayed after the World Cup, and it produced a Champion!
That report for that will follow very soon.
