After that strange weekend we are down to eight teams. There were some low scores due to the League Cup Final but that didn’t stop Mighty Fine Feeling from putting up 54 while he continues his challenge to be the very best-ish.
The headline news this week is that the minnows of Mourinho-lo have done it again! They’ve surprised the bookies and continue to smash through giants like a Pacific Rim Jaeger. They’ve now added a second Premier League scalp to a collection that already includes the Cup holders Tralfamadore Zoo. Having only ever played one Cup match previously (losing 50-49 to Chucky Pad last season), Mourinho-lo have now won three in a row and continue to defy the odds.
When FC Santa Barbara met Cornballers FC in the Last 16 three years ago, they walked out comfortable winners. This year in a repeat of that fixture Cornballers came agonisingly close to delivering payback, but FCSB stole the win by a single point! In the QF match after that 2016 victory, FCSB lost by a single point themselves, so they may feel that some karma has been exercised.
In what was easily the highest-scoring game of the round, Mighty Fine Feeling beat stillluvQPR by a clear ten points thanks largely to Hayden and Laschelles in Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield, despite the League One side finishing the weekend with an above-average 44. MFF went out at this stage last year so will be relieved to be back in the QFs again.
K.H. Granitza Sting will make their first appearance in the BFFA Cup Quarter-Finals after knocking out Glentoran FC in the lowest-scoring game of the round. While Glentoran didn’t have the lowest score of the round, they couldn’t compete with a 35-pointer from their higher-League opposition.
Two other teams that will be experiencing the pressures of the Quarter-Finals for the first time are Sugar Daddies and PSV Wide Open who both knocked out higher-League opposition to make it to the Last Eight. Just like Mourinho-lo, Sugar Daddies had only previously played in the Cup once before this season; they lost 38-34 to League rivals Cabezazo Increible. Similarly, PSV had never won in the Cup before this season either; they lost to Wijnaldum Leviosa in 2017 and Smash & Grab in 2018. This season they’ve won three in a row and the Cup Final dream continues.
Not only have Smash & Grab and Wijnaldum Leviosa both enjoyed knocking PSV out of the Cup, but they both get the opportunity to do it again this year. Both teams will be in the box for the next round draw after comfortably knocking out Championship teams RelicFC and Banana Swans. These two teams played each other in the League last weekend too, RelicFC won 36-27 thanks to Troy Deeney’s brace and another goal from Chris Wood.
The Quarter-Finals will begin on Saturday 9th March with the seasiders Brighton travelling to rivals Crystal Palace, and end with a big game in the battle for a Champions League place between Arsenal and Manchester United.
